About 90-95% of all North American cases of diabetes are type 2, and about 20% of the population over the age of 65 has diabetes mellitus type 2. The principal treatment of type 1 diabetes, even from the earliest stages, is replacement of insulin. Insulin enables most body cells (about 2/3 is the usual estimate, including muscle cells and adipose tissue) to absorb glucose from the blood for use as fuel, for conversion to other needed molecules, or for storage. Research has not been able to establish a connection between autoantibodies, antibodies to cow's milk proteins, and Type 1 diabetes. The first goal can be achieved through close glycemic control (ie, blood glucose levels); the reduction effect in diabetic plications has been well demonstrated in several extensive clinical trials and is thus well established.
